Arts Centre Melbourne with YIRRAMBOI KIN Program are thrilled to announce a commission for a new large scale work for children.
Using songs, stories and pictures from Aunty Ruby Hunter’s children’s book Butcher Paper, Texta, Blackboard and Chalk, artists from YIRRAMBOI’s KIN program will be supported to develop new ideas for further development, toward potential presentation of a new work for kids as part of YIRRAMBOI 2019.
Over 5 days (8 – 12 May) KIN artists across disciplines of music, dance, theatre, visual arts and new media will inhabit a collaborative development space, which will be programmed as an open to the public drop in venue – to stimulate discussion around the creation of new work, provide critical feedback to artists early in the development period and to encourage a broader dialogue around Indigenous arts making practice in the public domain.
There is an identified gap in work being made for Aboriginal children by Aboriginal artists. This project aims to address the need for Indigenous led theatre and dance for main stages and broader Australian audiences, and beautifully pay homage to the life and career of one of Aboriginal Australia’s beloved national treasures.
The KIN program is a proud initiative of YIRRAMBOI.
